Idiot Sunglasses - March 2025 (#59)

Happy St. Patty’s folks! Your dude Brent just had something pretty funny happen that provided some interesting insight. I received quite the gift and didn’t even know it…

Money

TLDR; Price, more often than not, sets what we value something at.

So each year around Christmas myself and one of my real estate partners exchange gifts, we have for years. This year however I didn’t receive anything from him during December. As it was December and I was super busy with holiday stuff it didn’t even cross my mind I hadn’t gotten anything. Early this year I get a text from him apologizing profusely and saying my gift was still in the back of his car. He’d gotten so busy he failed to mail it… and he felt so bad he was going get me something even nicer! I told him no worries and didn’t think anything of it. He wouldn’t tell me what the present was, but said he uses them everyday and loves them.

Let me preface this next part by explaining that some people get random free stuff from China and our family is one of them. It’s not super often, but when it happens we shrug it off and move on with our day. It’s usually just super cheap random items like a ring or something. These companies send cheap stuff to legitimate address to boost their Amazon numbers and look more legit. Somehow we got on a list…

So we got a package with a random set of sunglasses in it with a brand my wife had never heard of, so she just throws it in our car in a little tote with other random stuff… just thinking they are cheap-o sunglasses. This was like a month ago.

Last week I ask my business partner how things are going on a remodel we’re doing on and I mention I’d never gotten that package he told me he’d sent. He then sends me the delivery info for some VERY NICE sunglasses! As in NOT cheap! I then realized that they were the sunglasses we thought were a random China delivery!!!

Being the idiot I am, I go from not caring to wear them, to being concerned for their care and very excited to wear them! What changed? Not the sunglasses! When I thought they were just cheap-o’s I maybe tried them on once and didn’t think a thing of it. And, of course, upon realizing they were actually very nice sunglasses I then cared about them a great deal. See how stupid?

How we perceive the value of something changes how we treat something! The honest to goodness truth is that, for the uninitiated, cheap sunglasses can look pretty darn similar to expensive ones. More often than not, it is the price that is paid for them that makes us recognize the value!

So, how does this apply to business? Everywhere! Selling a product? Your better off pricing it on the high end. Selling your services? If you want people to take you seriously your cost can’t be a bargain! A really great example of this is what happens with stocks, commodities, and crypto assets. People have GREAT respect for stuff when it’s expensive, say things like ‘they would never sell’ cause it’s such a good thing, but once the price drops… even though what is behind the asset may NOT have materially changed… people suddenly don’t want it anymore!

So the question for you is… are YOU valuing what you have and do appropriately? Also, what are others undervaluing that you value higher? Figure that out and you’ll have an edge on everyone…
