Reach for YOUR straightjacket - Jan 2025 (#52)

Warmest greetings during this frigid January dear reader. You may have noticed your dude Brent has been quiet lately. Honestly, it’s been a grueling couple of weeks. So much so I knew I had to reach for my own ‘straightjacket’ of sorts to keep myself sane lol. Allow me to explain…

Years ago I had the chance to go to Glacier Bay in Alaska. If you’ve never heard of it, its this rad place where a massive glacier slowly falls into the ocean, making enormous waves accompanied by dramatic sounds. It is absolutely stunning and imho should be on EVERY adventurous person’s bucket list. We were on a decent size boat watching this when I looked to my right and saw an absolutely exquisite white yacht. On the side of this yacht was painted, in an ostentatious font, ‘straightjacket.’ This of course made anyone who saw it chuckle, but the implication was obvious… that boat helped keep it’s owner SANE. It kept the crazy at bay…

I love the principle there of recognizing what keeps you sane and leaning into it when you need it. For me, in addition to my faith, its exercise (mostly running). Many times people ask how I can STAND running and then they proceed to tell me how much they’ve always hated it. I tell them it’s more than just some random hobby I’ve learned to enjoy… its my ‘straightjacket.’ When things get crazy, its perfect for blowing off some steam.

Straightjacket! (ok so I never saw this episode so it could be completely out of context…)

A few days before I was set to close on the RV Park, I found out a close friend passed away unexpectedly. I ended up going to the funeral last Monday and closing on the RV Park the very next day. If you’ve ever bought a property you know that there’s a great deal that has to come together last minute… suffice it to say it was a stressful time. I knew I had to reach for my ‘straightjacket’. I really like to run and at the moment really felt the need to run, I needed a solid run out in the glorious sunshine as nature intended… only problem is… it’s January in Utah. COLD!!! I’m a wuss as a general rule so I had definitely NOT been running outside lol.

So I looked up if it was even safe to go running outside in 20 degree weather… and sure enough it was… with the right clothing. I looked up what I needed and found there was only one piece of clothing they recommended that I didn’t have… a neck gaiter. I quickly went online and bought it right then. It turned out to be just what I needed. I’ve since logged many miles in the Utah winter and it’s helped me keep my crap some semblance of together.

As the saying goes ‘when it rains, it pours’ and everyone gets their turn under the raincloud. My only message to you today dear reader is to recognize what your ‘straightjacket’ is… and to know when to reach for it. Hopefully it’ll keep you from ever having to wear a real one :)
